TIPS FOR DEPLOYING OUTSIDE OF CANADA
Neighbours
Tell your neighbours you'll be gone, and let them know if Lonely Shacks (or another property care company) will be watching your place. Give them their number so they’ll be able to reach somebody in case anything urgent happens.
Social Media
Make sure that you have updated all your privacy settings on your social media accounts. This will strengthen your security and help avoid any unwanted hacking, spoofing, and catfishing on your accounts while you are deployed.
Passports
Make sure your passport is current, valid, and won't expire for at least 12 months from your deployment date. If you're going to be meeting somebody in another location during your mid-deployment leave, make sure their passport is also valid for at least six months past your vacation date.
Mail Forwarding
Visit Canada Post Online or in person and have your mail forwarded to your overseas address (Belleville ON PO Box). Since mail takes a long time, have your mail forwarding end about 6 weeks before your deployment ends. Important note: Canada Post will not forward parcels or prepaid envelopes.
Family
The Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) and your until family support section are available while you're gone. Make sure your family knows who to call and when. Let your family know what your mailing address is while deployed, and what rules to follow when mailing anything overseas; customs rules, delivery time, etc.
House Sitting / Custodial
Quite often individuals leave their house/apartment unattended while they are overseas. In the event that anything happens to your home, you won’t be covered by insurance as it wasn’t being looked after. It is important to have a house sitting service in place keeping track of visits, this will help in the event of an insurance claim.
Power of Attorney
Use the DND form for your military pay and anything to do with military while deployed. Use your own attorney-designed POA for everything else domestic.
Life Insurance
Double check that it's up to day and won't expire while you're deployed. Make sure the named beneficiary isn't out of date.
Auto Insurance
Tell your insurance company that your vehicle will be stored while you're gone. Taking off collision and liability should save you a bunch of money while deployed. Do NOT cancel your insurance policy completely, because they would start you as a new driver when you return.
Banks & Credit Cards
Contact your banks & credit card companies to let them know you'll be out of the country. They'll understand. They will put a note on file to protect you from fraud and to allow you to access your info while overseas.
